Reasons to Move to an Assisted Living Community

“Why should I move to an assisted living community?” “I’m doing fine on my own.” “I’ve lived in this home for most of my life and I’m not leaving it.” These, and many more, are quotes from people that are hoping to avoid moving to a more supportive environment.  But contrary to many opinions, sometimes it can be a way to be more active and healthy.

Here are some of the reasons to make a move to assisted living;

  • The home is getting to be too much to handle. Family, friends, or paid help are managing most of the daily tasks to keep the home safe and in good order.
  • At-home senior care has become harder to secure for the hours that are needed. The cost of having someone in 24 hours per day, seven days per week is more costly than going to assisted living and having the staff already in place.
  • Socialization in the home environment has become difficult or non-existent. Being alone all the time can be depressing and cause unhealthy eating or sleeping habits.  Having an active calendar filled with various types of activities help keep the mind stimulated.
  • Meal preparation and the clean up after it is already included. Residents have nutritious meals served to them restaurant style.
  • Our residents receive assistance with daily tasks such as bed making, trash removal, weekly housekeeping and personal laundry and linen services.
  • Medication management can be completely taken over so medications aren’t skipped or doubled up on. Residents and families have peace of mind knowing medications are under control.
  • Residents can have assistance with showers and getting dressed, they may also need some reminders to keep them on track.
  • Transportation to doctor’s appointments and shopping are scheduled. Often, seniors don’t want to ask for help and just go without.  Sometimes families are doing all the transportation and still trying to manage their own day to day activities.

These are just a few of the reasons to make a move to assisted living.  It’s always nice seeing a new resident blossom after they move in and adjust to their new surroundings.  The friendships they form with other residents and the staff are lasting and comforting.  And once they have given up the hassles of home maintenance, the weight on the shoulders of everyone that was contributing can be lifted.  It’s a good day to start thinking of a move!!!
